Before being appointed The Brenda Strafford Chair in the Prevention of Domestic Violence at the Faculty of Social Work, University of Calgary, Lana Wells was a member of the senior leadership team at the United Way of Calgary and Area where she led the community investments and collaborations division and the public policy and government relations portfolio. Lana had her own consulting company from 2000-2005 where she worked with numerous non-profit organizations and all three levels of government as a researcher, planner, policy analyst, change manager, project manager, strategic and business planner, evaluator, facilitator and trainer. Her areas of expertise include family and sexual violence, women’s issues, children and youth services, social policy, social justice and social change, leadership and organizational change and the not for profit sector.

Lana volunteers widely, sits on several boards of directors and is currently the president of The Alex – a not-for-profit community health network that connects vulnerable populations to services and programs to support their health and well-being. She is also a Board member of PREVNet (Promoting Relationships and Eliminating Violence Network) a national network of leading researchers and organizations, working together to stop bullying in Canada (www.prevnet.ca). In 2013, Lana was appointed to the Alberta Family Violence Death Review Committee whose purpose is to enhance legislation, tools, processes and policies to improve the security, education, health, safety and well-being of children and youth in Alberta. In 2012, Lana became a fellow at the School of Public Policy, University of Calgary where she is teaching on social policy in Canada. She is currently leading the MSW Leadership Program in the Faculty of Social Work where she also teaches on leadership. Currently, Lana is leading Shift: The Project to End Domestic Violence in the Faculty of Social Work. The purpose of Shift is to enhance the capacity of policy makers, systems leaders, clinicians, service providers and the community at large, to significantly reduce the rates of domestic violence. Since the appointment in 2010, Lana has held over 2 million in research funding, grants and awards. She actively supervises graduate students within the Faculty of Social Work and the School of Public Policy. In 2011, Shift was engaged by the Government of Alberta to bring forward research in prevention science and contribute to the redesign of their family violence prevention framework, Family Violence Hurts Everyone: A Framework to End Family Violence in Alberta, which was released on November 29, 2013.
