Dr. Dorothy Vaandering

Associate Professor, Faculty of Education

Dr. Dorothy Vaandering is associate professor in the Faculty of Education at Memorial University, St. John’s, NL. In this context, as an researcher, educator and practitioner,  she weaves together interests and experiences that are rooted in the desire to honour the dignity, worth and diversity of all people, as well as the desire to "make hope practical and despair unconvincing" (Giroux, 1988; Williams, 1980)

Her teaching and research expertise lie in the implementation and sustainability of restorative justice in education.  This interest intersects with other topics including school climate, curriculum integration, citizenship education, aboriginal and settler relationships, and decolonization.

She is currently working to introduce restorative justice to the Newfoundland and Labrador education context through a SSHRC funded project entitled Relationships First: Implementing Restorative Justice from the Ground Up. The project is unique in that it integrates restorative justice philosophy and experiences into professional development holistically to create a transformative experience for educators.

Dorothy has a variety of articles in publications such as Contemporary Justice Review; Journal of Peace Education; Restorative Justice: An International Journal; Journal of School Violence; The Review of Education, Pedagogy, and Cultural Studies; and Canadian Teacher.
