Dr. Kate Harkness

Professor, Departments of Psychology & Psychiatry

Dr. Kate Harkness is a Professor in the Psychology and Psychiatry Departments at Queen’s University. Dr. Harkness received her PhD from the University of Oregon, and completed her residency and an NIMH post-doctoral fellowship at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Dr. Harkness is the Director of the Mood and Anxiety Assessment Service in the Department of Psychology, a pro bono assessment and treatment referral service for adolescents and young adults suffering from mental illness and their families who cannot afford psychological services. She is also an Associate Editor at the flagship Journal of Abnormal Psychology, and serves on the executive boards of several journals, granting panels, and scientific societies. Her research programme is focused on causal models of major depression in adolescence and young adulthood that examine how the interaction between genetic vulnerability and early environment sensitize the biological and psychological stress response systems. She is currently heading federally-funded studies investigating biopsychosocial risk and resilience factors in the first episode of depression. She is also heading the psychosocial component of a pan-Canadian network grant aiming to identify biomarkers of treatment response in depression.
