Dr. Brenda Gladstone

Assistant Professor, Dalla Lana School of Public Health & Project Analyst at the Community Health Systems Resource Group, Hospital for Sick Children

Brenda Gladstone, PhD is a health sociologist with the Community Health Systems Group at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.  She is Assistant Professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto where she teaches graduate courses in qualitative methodology as Academic Fellow at the Centre for Critical Qualitative Health Research. As a SickKids Foundation/CIHR New Investigator her new program of research focuses on inter-generational experiences of mental health and illness.  She is specifically examining how young people manage everyday life in families where a parent has a mental illness.  Using an innovative methodological approach to integrated knowledge creation and translation her study involves an explicit collaboration between young people, clinicians, educators, policy makers and academic researchers in an iterative research process that examines young people’s help-seeking experiences across home, school and community settings; in addition to those of specialty mental health and primary care service settings. Brenda is keen to understand how young people acquire further competencies and skills through guided participation and active engagement in the research process.  Awarded an International Research Fellowship to collaborate with scholars on innovative social research methods at the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom she was also invited to collaborate with an emerging network of international colleagues from Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, Australia and the United States to identify current gaps in our knowledge and future areas of research with respect to research with children of parents with mental illnesses and the potential for cross-country comparative studies that will adapt learning from her studies in other social settings.
