Six Kingston, Ontario teenagers (aged 13-17) participated in a research project called the "Disconnection Challenge." The study, run by PREVNet partner researcher Valerie Steeves of the University of Ottawa had participants log out of their social media accounts for a week, though they could use their smartphones and computers for school work and contacting parents. The study revelaed that when teens put their phones down for a week, they rediscover the power of connection and when they return to social media, they use it differently. They also reported sleeping better, spending more time outside and getting homework done on or before deadlines more often.
