Be inspired. Get involved!

Newsletter Volume 7, Issue 1

Bullying Awareness Week (November 17-21) reminds all of us of the importance of bullying prevention, and it is a great springboard for starting conversations, accessing new resources, and engaging in fresh and relevant learning activities with children and youth.  Of course, maintaining a commitment to respectful and positive relationships is a value that is critical throughout the entire year, but the third week of November is a great time to check in with children and youth.  Now that the school year is well underway peer relationships at school, within sport teams and community programs are becoming consolidated.  Are the children and youth in your care feeling safe, included, and able to participate with confidence?  When adults open up these conversations, it sends a message that they genuinely care about what it feels like to be a young person in a complex social world.  Some children and youth may have a great deal to say as soon as you start a conversation.  Others may be more reticent to share their experiences, whether positive or negative.  Regardless, opening up the conversation now increases the chances that children and youth will see you as a resource, and come to you in the future if they need support.

PREVNet is thrilled to bring you this newsletter with up to date and evidence-based information that focuses on cyberbullying and digital citizenship. We thank Crystal Dittrick (University of Calgary) and Hezron Z. Onditi (University of British Columbia), two of PREVNet’s graduate students, for their creativity and passion in taking the lead on the writing of this newsletter.

We’re also excited about the launch of three INFOGRAPHICS prepared by Taylor Katzel (an undergraduate student at Queen’s University) and a new resource for teachers: BULLYING PREVENTION FACTS AND TOOLS FOR SCHOOLS.

We encourage everyone to read these resources thoroughly and share them widely.  As well, we are so impressed and gratified to the see the quality of the learning activities for children and youth created by our partner organizations in time for Bullying Awareness Week.  We encourage you to not only read and disseminate the resources, but to get involved!  Watch the bullying themed episodes on Family Channel, engage in learning activities created by MediaSmarts, join the blog post conversation hosted by the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport on November 17, to name but a few ideas!

We hope you find this special Bullying Awareness Week edition of PREVspectives interesting and informative, and as always, we’re happy to hear what you think. You can email us at   Be kind to one another.

Volume 6 Issue 4 November 2013 Bullying Awareness Week Edition

Welcome to this special Bullying Awareness Week edition of PREVspectives.

Although there is increased focus on bullying from November 18 – 24, the prevention of bullying and the promotion of healthy relationships is an ongoing challenge. PREVNet and its 55 youth-serving organization partners are committed to providing evidence-based knowledge, tools and strategies that can be used all year long in schools, organizations, the community, and the home – everywhere children live, play, learn and work.

In this edition of PREVspectives we highlight some of the initiatives our partners have planned for Bullying Awareness Week. Although many of these events will be launched during this week, they will all have long lasting effects. The Family Channel’s updated Teacher’s Guide in English and French is a good example.

We’re also excited about the launch of two new web pages at PREVNet’s BEST (Bullying Evaluation and Strategies Tool) is an evidence-based, online diagnostic and assessment tool that can help create a healthy, positive learning environment in schools. We have also developed a Bullying Policy and Legislation web page that outlines how the law deals with bullying in each province or territory as well as the rights and responsibilities of parents and educators.

Also in this edition, we introduce the French language version of our popular handbook, “Bullying Prevention: What Parents Need to Know” and tell you about MyHealth Magazine’s 30 Day Challenge. We highlight the Public Health Agency of Canada’s Violence Prevention Portal and a FREE webinar featuring two of our partners, WITS and the Public Health Agency of Canada.

We hope you find this special Bullying Awareness Week edition of PREVspectives interesting and informative, and as always, we’re happy to hear what you think. You can email us at

Back to School

A Message from our Scientific Co-Directors

It’s September and back to school – an exciting time for many children and youth, but for too many, it is also a time of fear and trepidation. Those are the young people who don’t look back on the last school year with memories of good friendships, enjoyment of extracurricular clubs and sports, and passing with good grades. Instead, they remember the times they were bullied, sometimes once, sometimes much more than that.

In this issue of PREVspectives, we look at the importance of developing healthy relationships and preventing bullying as school gets underway. There is a wealth of resources at, including videos, tip sheets, and tools for educators, parents, teens, and children. We also have a special section on cyberbulling.

PREVNet has updated the Teacher’s Guide that is an important component of Family Channel’s StandUP! Campaign for Bullying Awareness Week. You’ll find a link to the new guide in this issue. And we’ll introduce you to a new back to school guide for parents that has been published by the Government of Nova Scotia. Much of the material in the parents’ handbook was originally published in PREVNet’s book, “Bullying Prevention: What Parents Need to Know”. We’ll also introduce you to a MyHealth Magazine’s 30 Day Challenge – a series of bullying prevention sessions for students in Grades 7 and 8.

PREVNet researchers and partners have been in high demand by media outlets as school returns and you’ll be able to see some of those articles and broadcasts. Also in this issue, we invited some of our partners to share their Back to School bullying prevention messages, and we’re pleased to pass those along.

We hope you find this Back to School edition of PREVspectives interesting and informative, and as always, we’re happy to hear what you think. You can email Andrew Barrett, PREVNet’s Marketing and Communications Coordinator at
